Trucks are very useful and utilitarian; as a result, they are often neglected in regards to their protection from the world around them. It would be wise to invest in a truck cover to protect your vehicle from the sometimes cruel world in which they reside.
Padding is very important when searching for the perfect truck cover. More is better here. The more padding that a cover has, the more protection it can offer your truck from all sorts of falling objects, from golf ball sized hail to golf balls whacked by the neighborhood kids. Padding is too important to overlook, be sure that the cover you choose has several layers for adequate protection at all times.
The most important thing to remember when getting a cover for your truck really has nothing at all to do with the cover. The most important tip is to make absolutely sure that the truck is clean. It needs to be as free of dirt and dust as possible when the cover is put on, this will help to avoid scratches and scuffs in the paint.
Look for a cover that is made of a breathable material. The cover should be lightweight and although not waterproof, it needs to dry out quickly after getting wet. If the cover is not breathable and holds in moisture, it can be detrimental to the paint job and increase the chance of creating rust.
One of the first things to consider before actually purchasing a truck cover is quality. This is a case where it is wise to buy the best that you can afford, do not cheap out on a truck cover. A high quality cover will protect your truck from UV rays, rain, dust even falling objects and animals.

The popular hummer vehicle manufactured by General Motors actually uses the design of the HumVee military vehicle. This vehicle was created to replace the old military jeeps of the US Army because it was getting obsolete in the sense that it cannot be adapted to the new requirements of the US Army today.
The need to traverse rough terrain easily simply cannot be done using the old style jeep. The new HumVee can easily do this using its wide suspension and stronger body. Of course, a bigger and better 4 wheel drive installed also helps a lot in making sure that the HumVee can indeed go anywhere on the face of the planet. Moreover, a deep water fording kit can also make the HumVee capable of fording a body of water up to 1.5 meters deep.
Today, there are more than 15 versions of this vehicle in the US Army alone. The HumVee army vehicle has become the standard cargo carrier, troop carrier, ambulance, automatic weapons platform, missile carrier and surface to air missile platform of the US Army.
It has become so popular that people are familiar with it without even having seen a real one. You can see HumVees in the news, in your pc games and in toy models. HumVee has indeed become the standard vehicle of the US Army.
The HumVee also has its civilian counterpart called Hummer. This vehicle is manufactured by General Motors and has become one of the popular vehicles in the market today.
The hummer is a vehicle derived from the HumVee design but on a smaller scale with components added for both comfort and style.
Today, there are several models of this vehicle being sold as a midsized sport utility truck or a sport utility vehicle. They are generally used by people requiring a rugged and off the road vehicle for their line of work. Some people also prefer them because of the image or the size of the vehicle.
Popular versions of these vehicle are the Hummer 1, which was the original design, the Hummer two, which was a smaller version of Hummer h1 and is considered as an efficient multipurpose vehicle, Hummer h2 sport utility truck which is a pickup truck version of the standard h2 vehicle and the hummer h3, which is even smaller than its two precedents and is being marketed as a mid sized sports utility vehicle.

T.A. Peterman had an inner passion: trucks. Despite this fact there was a time when he felt that he couldnt find a truck of his liking and thats when he decided to build his own truck.
In 1939 he acquired the Fageol Truck and Coach Factory. Peterman wanted to have a place where he could modify old trucks at his will and this plant served his purpose. He began to envision the standard that he wanted for his trucks, with this concept in mind he built a truck with the best quality ever seen.
His design began to give him a reputation. He kept manufacturing trucks and branded them Peterbilt (name of a line of wooden doors that one of his companies manufactured).
During World War II, T.A. decided to pursue government contracts for heavy duty trucks instead of assembling combat vehicles. Unfortunately T.A. Peterman died from cancer after the War. Ida, his widow took care of his business affairs.
The direction of the company took a different turn in 1946 when five of the companys main employees and outside investors purchased Peterbilt Motors from Ida Peterman for $450 000.
L.A. Lundstrum was named President of Peterbilt Motors and their development continued; by 1947 their income surpassed $4 500 000 while trucks were manufactured on a daily basis.
Pacific Car and Foundry Company (PACCAR) acquired Peterbilt Motors in 1958 as an unincorporated division.
Today T.A. Petermans dream is more alive than ever, Peterbilt continues to progress as new challenges lie ahead. The company maintains Petermans original vision: the manufacture of high quality, innovative heavy duty trucks that surpass customer needs and expectations.

Auto shows are an American tradition, some of which have continued into 100 years of automotive existence. The 2007 automotive shows again brought in the crowd to admire the new innovations, concepts, and imagination of the leading automobile manufacturers.
Typically, the popular auto showcases are held by the International Auto Show in Detroit and the LA Auto Show, both normally occurring in January. This year LAs show was moved to November which resulted in more participation than ever from auto makers. There were 21 world debuts and 14 American debuts.
The environmental theme this year definitely brought out the tree huggers and hippies LA is known for. I would like to highlight three of the most interesting of these eco-friendly models. Below are the three show stoppers that I feel deserve special attention.
1. Ford Escape Hybrid
This new electric motorized all t terrain vehicle outputs 70KW, 5,000 rmp, with a max voltage of 330V. It also has a 2.3 L Atkinson cycle using a 4-cylinder cranking 113 hp and 124 lb-ft, creating a combined 155hp.
2. Hummer 02 Concept
The winner of the California Design challenge, this was designed by GMs West Coast Advanced Design Studio. It treads lightly on the ground and sort of looks like a Moon rover an astronaut would drive.
It transforms carbon dioxide into oxygen that is then released back into the environment by using algae-filled body panels. All the vehicles parts are made from 100% recycled after consumer products. GM also won last years competition in the same category.
3. BMW X5
This new, more luxurious descendent of last years model gives consumers two engine choices: 350hp 4.8 L V-8 or a 260hp 3.0L 1-6. All come equipped with All-wheel drive automatic.

While the Jeep is famous in its history of serving the US military there is some misunderstanding concerning who created the original Jeep. Many incorrectly attribute the development of the first Jeep to Willys. The true inspiration of the first Jeep design came from a small and relatively unknown company by the name of the American Bantam Car Company based in Butler, PA.
The American Bantam Car Company was first established as a subsidiary of the Austin Car Company, a British car manufacturer, and was originally called American Austin Car Company. Austin made a small and economical car called the Austin Seven, which was very popular in England. Unfortunately for the Austin Car Company, the Austin Seven never saw popularity here in the states and the American Austin Car Company nearly went bankrupt. It was eventually taken over by its Chairman who changed its name to the American Bantam Car Company (Bantam). Bantam took the original Austin Seven design and made a number of improvements. It was a slightly bigger version than its British cousin and was capable of longer drives.
The Bantam folks were pioneers and saw a need for a light military vehicle. They provided a few of their autos to the National Guard in an effort to sell the military on the use of such vehicles. The military finally realized a need for a light mobile vehicle and finally agreed to discuss a design with Banatm in 1940. The outcome of this meeting was a proposed military 4X4 hybrid that was to weigh less than 1300 pounds. In 1941 Bantam developed a Bantam Reconnaissance Car in response to the U.S. Armys request for an all-purpose military vehicle. This vehicle ultimately became the prototype of the Jeep, which was later manufactured by Willys (Willys MB) and Ford (GPW).
The US military was concerned about Bantams ability to produce the necessary amount of vehicles and because of this they decided to offer other manufacturers the opportunity to produce the vehicle. The requirement was to design a vehicle and with the approval of the US military, the manufacturer was then to build and deliver a prototype within 49 days. With the militarys approval of the prototype, an additional 70 working rigs were to be delivered in 75 days. The required weight limit caused many manufacturers to turn away from the project with only Bantam and Willys participating initially, and Ford joining in later.
Bantams drawings were the closest to the militarys requirements even though their design had problems with the weight restrictions. The company completed their design and built and delivered the prototype on schedule. The military having tested the vehicle to its fullest was satisfied with the design and performance, and commissioned the additional 70 vehicles to be built. This is where the Military began to be concerned about Bantams ability to produce enough vehicles. The company was fairly small and had a limited capacity. What the military did was to grant Willys and Ford access to the trials of the Bantam prototype and to their actual designs, even though Willys failed to submit a prototype on time and Ford showed little interest in the endeavor up to that point in time. Both Ford and Willys were allowed to submit prototypes, the Quad (Willys) and the Pygmy (Ford), well outside the specified time frame and well above the required weight limit. Both the Ford and Willys versions borrowed quite a bit from Bantams design.
The Bantam vehicle, Bantam GPV (General Purpose Vehicle), was delivered on time, met the majority of the specifications, and performed well in the tests. By all accounts Bantam should have been awarded the contract, and there was a large controversy over how the contract was handled. The military, unfortunately for Bantam, identified strengths and weaknesses of each vehicle. The Bantam was to high off the ground and was underpowered, while the Quad was well over the weight limit but had a more powerful engine, and the Pygmy was underpowered and had suspect steering components but handled best of the three vehicles. The military still concerned about the capability of two of the companies, Bantam and Willys, decided to place an order for 1500 vehicles with each company producing 500, as long as they met the original specifications with the only change being an increase in the weight limit to a little over 2200 pounds.
All three companies took the best ideas from each other and from Bantams original production design to further develop their vehicles causing the 3 vehicles to be extremely similar. In mid 1941 the military decided that the 1500 vehicles should be of a standardized design and not three different types. They ultimately chose the Willys design due to its lower cost, and that version was adopted as the standard army vehicle. Willys went on to secure the contract to provide the next 16,000 Willys. This contract award called for a series of alterations to the design, which lead to the classic standard Jeep design.
Bantam continued to produce its production version, known, as the Bantam 40 BRC, but the US Army did not want it because it was non-standard. The already produced vehicles and the new production units were forwarded to the Russian and British armies. It is very interesting to note that after watching the testing trials the Russian military actually chose the Bantam over the Willys and Fords units. The eventual Willys design closely resembles the 40 BRC.
In the winter of 1941 the army wanted to develop a second source for the vehicle because Willys couldnt keep up with production requirements and a wanted a safeguard against the possible sabotage at the one production facility. In November the US Army awarded Ford to build 15,000 jeeps to the Willys design and drawing. The Willys MB and the Ford GPW vary in minor details only as the military required that the parts be interchangeable. The GPW in the Ford models name was reference to G for government vehicle, P referred to its wheel base size, and the W was for designating that it had a Willys engine. The one change Ford made, which was adopted by the military as standard design, was the now all-familiar grill. With Ford now producing the jeep along with Willys, the military was able to provide the jeeps to its allies and production of the Bantam 40 BRC was discontinued.
Combined production of the Willys MB and Ford GPW during WW II was over 500,000. A total of 2,675 of the Bantam 40 BRCs were built. The company reportedly never produced vehicles again. The US military awarded Bantam contracts to build trailers as a way to make it up to them for not receiving the jeep contract.
So, who created the original jeep? Well historically this has seen a bit of controversy going back as far as 1943 when the Fair Trade Commission ultimately charged Willys with false and misleading advertising claims stating that Willys had created the Jeep. The court determined that the Jeep was fostered and conceived in Butler, PA, by the American Bantam Car Company. The primary designer who worked on the Jeep project for Bantam was Karl Probst, and, now you know who really created the first Jeep!

The last generation Chevrolet Tahoe was quite popular among people that were looking to buy a full size sport utility vehicle. The number of people and amount of luggage that you could get into the Chevrolet Tahoe was among the best in the industry. But this was not good enough for Chevrolet. Instead, they decided to give this model a complete overhaul for this year. Not only does the exterior have a new look, but the interior looks as good as ever.
The number one selling point of the Chevrolet Tahoe is that you can transport your family, as well as a large amount of goods without any trouble at all. If you do not want to buy a minivan, but still need the space, the Chevrolet Tahoe is the car that you have been searching for.
In addition to its freshened look inside and out, the Chevrolet Tahoe is again available with four wheel drive. This is a major selling point of the Chevrolet Tahoe, especially for people that live in an area that gets a lot of snow. In addition, this is a benefit that is not offered by the majority of minivans.
From the outside it may appear that the Chevrolet Tahoe would be hard to drive, but after you are behind the wheel you will soon find out that this is not the case. The Chevrolet Tahoe is quite manageable despite its large size.
The new Chevrolet Tahoe is sure to sell well throughout the winter months as well as the end of summer.

Pick up trucks and other open rear end vehicles are often purchased for their utility. The bed of such vehicles is used effectively to store cargo, equipment and tool boxes. In order to ensure that these products are safeguarded in transit, people may opt to install Tonneau covers that help secure goods in their place, along with protecting them from the elements. Since such open spaces can be used effectively for transportation and storage, they are highly valued for their utility. For this reason, they are commonly referred to as utility beds. Ladder racks are similar to ladders and are a strong and sturdy framework that constitutes of numerous beams. They are popular aftermarket accessories that help increase a vehicles cargo capacity.
When purchasing utility bed ladder racks, it is important to consider the purpose the vehicle is to be used for. Based on this, people may opt for standard mount or rail mount utility bed ladder racks. Commercial ladders are those that boast of excessive cargo capacity without compromising the utility bed capacity. Certain manufacturers even offer ladder racks that need to be fitted along the exterior of the vehicle walls. These are to be installed, keeping in mind road safety regulations. Such options are popular as they provide optimum utilization of limited storage space.
Utility bed ladder racks are easy to install and maintain. People may even opt for custom-made utility bed ladder racks that could be of a drop-in box setup. Such designs may prove to be more costly but are considered to suit the users purpose better. Apart from this, people may purchase utility bed ladder racks from online or local stores. Most stores stock regular sizes and it is advisable for potential customers to know their vehicle sizes when choosing a utility bed ladder rack.

There are several benefits to aluminum ladder racks. They are a third of the weight of steel, and do not burden the vehicle with extra weight. Furthermore, they are rust-free and have a relatively longer life. The following are two of the many high-quality aluminum ladder racks available on the market today.
Sprinter Van Rack can hold up to 500 pounds of wood, ladders, conduit, etc. This heavy duty aluminum ladder rack is structured with 1 1/2″” square cross supports, set into 2″” square uprights. Also, their maintenance is not too difficult. Mounting base clamps hold uprights to drip rails, without drilling holes into the vehicle. The extra-wide base on the clamp gives optimum support and constancy. Also, it distributes the load evenly. Sprinter Van Rack has ladder stops that help in holding the ladders in place. It is best to choose either 2-cross or 3-cross support models. The ladder rack comes with a powder coat finish that gives security and sturdy, long lasting good looks.
Heavy-duty aluminum and steel ladder racks are available with either aluminum or steel cross supports. The supports are 1/8″” wall clear anodized aluminum that can also be painted. The steel cross supports are 14-gauge steel sheltered by a rugged, high gloss and electronically aided powder coat finish, which is subsequently fused with heat. This helps combat corrosion, rust and chipping. The aluminum cross-support ladder rack can hold loads up to 750 pounds, with the steel cross support ladder rack holding up to 850. The load is distributed uniformly on the ladder rack. The uprights clamp onto drip rails with a drip rail clamp assembly. This features a stainless steel eyebolt which can be used to hold tie-downs on the rack. This is a drill-free method that makes it easy to remove the ladder rack or transfer it to another vehicle if required.

If youre a serious towing enthusiast, you probably already know the reasons why you should add a truck air ride suspension system to your heavy-duty truck: a quality truck air suspension system helps by cushioning a bumpy ride, leveling your vehicle, reducing wheel hopping, limiting trailer bucking and adding stability during braking. And, an air ride suspension system helps you protect your investment in your heavy-duty truck by preventing the harsh wear and tear caused by heavy towing.
But, before you make a decision to buy a product that can have such a significant impact on your truck, your trailer and your load, there are several factors to take into consideration, including load capacity, manufacturing quality, ease of installation, adjustments to your vehicle, warranty, and much more. Here are a few tips for serious shoppers who are looking for optimum performance and value in a truck air suspension system.
All Truck Air Suspensions are NOT Created Equal
As you start shopping around, keep in mind that there are two main types of air suspension systems on the market:
Adjustable helper springs. This type of system is generally comprised of an add-on helper spring that aids in leveling the truck and reducing vehicle bounce, dip, or bottoming out when hauling a heavy load or towing. The air springs can be adjusted, often with a service station air hose, to the trucks load condition for more control and leveling support.
Disadvantages: The helper springs are bolted directly onto your trucks factory leaf springs. Unfortunately, factory leaf springs deflect and twist under acceleration and braking. This axle wind-up not only makes the truck drop when you accelerate, but it also makes the truck dive forward when you apply the brakes, throwing nearly all the weight of the truck and trailer onto the front suspension and brakes. Helper springs also tend to distort the natural spring frequency of the leaf springs, actually making the ride worse in certain situations. This type of air suspension system is best suited for leveling the ride and light or occasional towing.
Advantages: initial cost is less expensive. (Note that additional equipment may be necessary over time, offsetting the cost).
Complete towing suspension system. This type of system is designed to both level the truck and improve the overall ride. Installing these kits involves removing the steel leaf spring on the truck and replacing it with an entirely new air spring. Some manufacturers also replace front and rear shocks for optimum performance.
Disadvantages: More expensive. (Note: if you purchase a quality kit that comes complete with all the bells and whistles for long-term performance, it may offset the initial expense)
Advantages: Trucks steel leaf spring is removed and replaced with a new spring, which allows for greater handling and control, stability, and safety, even when hauling the heaviest loads. Sometimes the manufacturer will install front and rear shocks to match the frequency of suspension.
Compare Important Features and Options
As with any product, each truck air suspension system claims to have the latest and greatest features and benefits. Its easy to get caught up in all the hype, but when you come right down to it, there are a few things that are more important than others. Heres a list of major features and options to consider when comparison shopping.
Quality of materials. Does the manufacturer use high quality premium parts that will hold up over years of heavy hauling? Avoid plastic fittings and lower grade materials that may wear out or need to be replaced. Quality materials translate to greater reliability and a longer life for your air ride suspensions system, even under the harshest towing conditions.
Ease of use. Is the system easy to use? Can you easily adjust your suspension level? Are there in-cabin controls to help you determine air pressure and load information? An air suspension system thats difficult to level and adjust will cause you added stress and unpredictability.
Articulation. Articulation, which is the up and down tilt of the axle, is a critical feature to consider. If you should have an accident and your trailer winds up in a hole, you want the axle to have maximum up and down movement. Most systems have heavy linkage between the front spring and the axle, which prevents adequate articulation.
Towing capacity. Look for the towing capacity of the air suspension system and be sure it can adequately handle the load you plan to tow. When it comes to towing capacity, the bigger the air spring, the more weight it can handle. Keep in mind that your truck and trailer load should never exceed the gross combined weight rating (GCWR), which is the total weight of the trailer under fully loaded conditions, including food, water, gear, etc.
Installation options. How is the system installed? Does your trucks frame need to be altered to install the system? Do holes need to be drilled? Can the system be removed if necessary? Before you buy, be sure that installation wont be a problem for your or your truck. Find out if you can install the system yourself or if it will require manufacturer assistance. If assistance is required, does the manufacturer provide you with a manual or access to a dealer or installation specialist?
Warranty and risk guarantee. Does your system provide a warranty that wont expire before youve had time to really test your system with a long haul? Does the manufacturer stand behind the product? Does the manufacturer offer a no-risk guarantee if you are not satisfied with the system?
Buyer Beware
Buyers need to especially beware of the claims made by many helper spring manufacturers that their systems are designed for heavy loads. In spite of the claims, the fact remains that these helper springs are bolted directly onto your factory leaf springs, which are NOT made for heavy towing. With this type of system, you run the risk of the leaf springs twisting under heavy acceleration and braking. In turn, this axle wind-up can make the truck drop when you accelerate, as well a throw the truck forward when you apply the brakes, throwing nearly all the weight of the truck and trailer onto your front suspension and brakes. If you merely want to level your ride, the helper spring makes a fine choice, but if you are serious about towing heavy loads, you need to consider a total performance towing suspension system.
Do a little research up front and youll avoid unnecessary wear and tear on your truck and costly repairs down the road. Your main consideration should be overall ride performance, safety and stability during heavy towing. If youre serious about towing, you need to be sure you are buying an air ride suspension system that can do more than level the ride; it needs to be suited for heavy towing. Like many things in the automotive industry, using an inexpensive aftermarket part often yields less than optimal results.
