Become A Biostatistician

When you marry science and numbers, amazing things can happen. This explains the appeal of biostatistics, a field which appears to be gaining in popularity. Because of the aging of the population, the practice of using statistics to study disease has taken on added significance.

A biostatistician develops studies which assist doctors in treating patients and help scientists to come up with new medications. Therefore, the work of a biostatistician can be critical in the fight against disease. As a result, working in this field can be intellectually stimulating, emotionally gratifying, and even financially rewarding, since salaries in the field can be in the $100,000 range.

As a biostatistician, youll be studying rates of disease and how well medicines perform. You can also explore how diet and exercise can prevent serious diseases such as cancer. In this way, youll be assisting people in living better, healthier lives.

Of course, given the fact that biostatistics is a specialized field, youll need extensive coursework in statistics and mathematics. Youll also have to possess the writing skills needed to compose surveys and communicate the results. It is also important for you to have extensive knowledge of biology and how the body works. As a result, youll need to obtain a graduate degree after finishing your coursework for your bachelors degree.

In addition to undergoing extensive training, youll also need to possess certain skills in order to work effectively as a biostatistician. These include an eye for detail, the ability to analyze complicated data, and a great deal of self-discipline.

As a biostatistician, you can work for agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration or the National Institutes of Health. As an alternative, you could work for a drug company or private research institute.

Got an Expertise? Why Not Become an Internet Coach?

These days, the internet seems to be the source for nearly everything. From fitness and diets to love relationships to gardening to buying a car, you’ll find all sorts of information online that’s available with a few simple clicks. Yup, internet coaching is a strong force online and you could be part of it.

If you feel it in your bones that you were meant to share what you know online, you’ll need to know if it’s right for you. And if it is, you might want to know how to do it. Here are a few tips to point you in the right direction:

Ask yourself

Do I have the expertise? Just because you studied psychology in high school doesnt mean you’re qualified to coach. You’ll need to have enough skills and experience in your chosen field to actually do it. You dont necessarily need to have a master’s degree, but higher qualifications are an asset and will assure your potential students (and clients) that they are in good hands.

Do I have the skills? Coaching isnt just about telling someone what to do. It’s about providing a nourishing environment for further learning and development for your clients. It’s about knowing what to say at a particular moment and avoiding unnecessary interaction. It’s about knowing what the best avenues for communications are and when to use them to maximize your client’s learning.

Do I have the patience? If you have a short fuse, you might want to reconsider. Your clients are not perfect individuals. Otherwise, they would not have come to you. There will be times that you’ll fail in certain aspects, or encounter some setbacks. If you understand what it takes, it will save you a lot of frustration and wasted effort.

Do I have the interest? If you’re only in it for the money and the popularity, don’t. Coaching must be something you truly like in order for it to work. If you don’t like it, you won’t make it as enjoyable and as progressive as it ought to be.

Once you’ve decided that coaching is for you, then examine what your skills are and where your strengths lie. Then, decide on one area and build your reputation from there. Some of the most common internet coaching topics are:

Business skills

From selling to marketing to customer service, you can teach sales and marketing professionals who want to become better at their jobs.

Mindful coaches

Inspiration is key to everything, so it should not be a surprise that this is a flourishing internet coaching area. Build a site with useful content on self-improvement through better self-image.

Fitness and Sports

You dont have to limit yourself with online video clips of aerobic exercises just to become a fitness and sports coach. If you can write great content, build a site with tips, guides and useful information on proper diet, exercises, equipment and health news. You could even team up with a trusted manufacturer or provider and link up for better exposure.

Promote learning

Education should never stop at college. You can coach students through your site and you dont even have to limit yourself with your neighborhood. Open your site to students around the world who dont have time to take classroom sessions. You’ll be amazed at the mutual learning this will give you.

Coach the coaches

Think the experts dont need improvement? Of course they do! How else can they assure up-to-date information and coaching styles if they stay stuck in one place? If you’ve had enough experience and have built enough reputation in your chosen community well enough to be believable and have enough name recall, you can offer your services to fellow coaches.

You can also make use of your site to exchange info and tips, turning your site to a place in the internet for coaches to interact and share their knowledge.

Tips to expand your internet coaching activities

Give talks for free. Sometimes, you’ll need to give something away for free just to get a leg in. Advertise your free services online and give talks at schools, communities and small conventions. The more you get yourself in the news, the more you gain an audience. Plus, the experience is also an opportunity for learning.

Promote yourself. When you’re just starting out, you might need to promote your coaching services yourself. Come up with copies for your site and your qualifications, post ads or submit articles with links to your site. Nobody else will do it for you, so when you have the chance, promote, promote, promote.

Send newsletters. Another way of gaining exposure and improving your writing is to create your own newsletters. This way, you will maintain a connection with your readers and clients and even expose yourself to other potential clients as well.

Learn more. Experts do need to learn and you’re not an exception. Getting better is a goal you work on and once you’ve reached a high, consider it a plateau and reach further. Become the best internet coach there is by opening your mind to learning opportunities not only from your fellow coaches, consultants and teachers, but from your students as well.

Approachability FAQ’s Answered, Part 1

The following questions come directly from hand-written audience evaluations from my speeches. I hope they provide you with great insight into approachability!

What are some approach techniques?
If two or more people are talking in a circle or small group, heres what you do:

1. Approach the group and smile. Dont cross your arms and make eye contact with whoever is speaking.
2. Dont say anything, wait for someone to speak to you first.
3. Use all three head nod speeds: slow = I follow you, medium = I agree, fast = Im excited.
4. If you can, find an appropriate time to chime in, either introduce yourself or comment on something thats been said.
5. Have fun!

If you walk into a room, club, party, event or bar and dont know anybody, you can always walk up to someone and say, Hi, my name is Brian. I dont know anybody here! This might elicit responses like:

1. Oh, well then please join us! Nice to meet you Brian!
2. Thats cool, I dont know anybody either. Im Sarah.
3. Really? Are you new on campus? First time here?
4. Get the hell away from me you weirdo! (Answer not likely)

What are tips for intros and goodbyes?
I always suggest the H.O.T. technique, aka Home of The… You say, Hi, Im Mark from Pittsburgh home of the greatest football team in the NFL. You could also use your affiliation. For example, Im Seth, President of ACACIA home of the best Halloween party on campus!

Exit lines are also great opportunities to have fun and try something unique. My girlfriend, for example, always tells her customers at Kinkos, Well, my names Jackie and Im the only girl here holler if you need me!

The key is: be memorable. Think about what ever other person in the room is going to say. Avoid it. Showcase your uniqueness. Put your person first.

How do you approach different types of people?
Lets start with approaching men vs. women. In the book The Power of Charm, Brian Tracy suggests the following trends: a womans key needs are affection, attention and respect; whereas a mans key needs are achievement, status and respect of key people. Converse accordingly.

Then theres The New Guy. Not necessarily a guy, but someone who is a first timer. This is a person who most likely feels uncomfortable. Your job is to a) be his first friend, b) get him talking about himself, and c) introduce him to others so he feels like hes part of the group.

How can you use your uniqueness to your advantage?
Ask yourself these questions: what are you all about? Whats your thing? Whats something you can do better than anyone? Find the answer and find your passion. This is your uniqueness. Then be sure to bring that uniqueness to the surface in every conversation.

Why? First, its easy to talk about. Second, youll get enthusiastic when you do talk about it. Third, the other person will feel comfortable sharing their uniqueness as a result.

What are some ways to overcome failure?
Small victories first. Figure out what youre failing at. Is it public speaking? Cool. Youre not alone! My suggestion is, try smaller scale situations and work your way up. Perhaps making a toast at a dinner table full of friends/family would be a good start, even singing karaoke! By the time youve had enough smaller scale practice, you should be able to move to the next level with greater confidence.

How do you open and approach random people?
Think of it this way: if a complete stranger approached you, what would you do? What would you want him to say? What would you NOT want him to say?

Think back to the motivators of human engagement. Learn, Influence, Play, Help and Relate. I always suggest, Excuse me, but Ive never been here before and… This is a surefire way to appeal to someones helpful side. Usually opening with that statement empowers them to act in a kinder way. Other similar examples are, Hi, I need your help… or Can you help me out for a sec?

How can I have the confidence to just walk up to somebody?
Some people have the following self-limiting beliefs in this situation: They wont say hello back to me. They wont be interested in me. I will make a fool of myself!

This is the number one reason people dont start conversations: fear of rejection. However, practice will make this fear fade away. The more you often you start conversations, the better you will become at it. So, be the first to introduce yourself or say hello. When you take an active instead of a passive role, your skills will develop and there will be less of a chance for rejection.

Also understand the gains vs. losses. For example, whats so bad about a rejection from someone you dont even know? On the other hand, a new contact awaits your introduction!

How can you use trivia in conversation?
Trivia is a great way to get a conversation rolling, spice up an encounter or show someone that youve taken an active interest in them or their organization.

Heres what I mean: lets say you and some friends are going out to a particular club or restaurant. Perhaps you could do some research on Google and get a few pieces of cool trivia about the place. Also, if youre attending an athletic event, pieces of trivia about the players or the sport in general should be a piece of cake to find and use in conversations.

The key with trivia is preparation. Are you willing to spend a few extra minutes before you leave to get some juicy tidbits? Hey, why not write them down on a little cheat sheet and glance at it from time to time? You might feel silly, but youd feel a whole lot sillier with nothing to say!

How can I be open with people and not shy about it?
The easiest way to not by shy and open with others is to get them to be open with you first. After someone has shared what theyre passionate about, for example, you will feel comfortable doing the same. For that reason, ask specific, open-ended questions that help you discover their passion so you will feel more comfortable reciprocating when the time is right.

How is approachability personally beneficial for my own well being?
According to a recent issue of Psychology Today, given a choice between an outing with good friends or an evening with strangers, most people would choose their friends. But according to a new study, we might have a better timeand go home in a better moodif we chose to make new acquaintances.

For example: in 2005 a University of Pennsylvania psychologist randomly assigned college students to bowl by themselves, with close friends or with complete strangers. To Rashid’s surprise, he found participants who bowled with strangers were happier than students who hand-picked buddies to accompany them (and, as expected, people who bowled by themselves). For those who made new friends, the experience was similar to a successful date. Says Rashid, “They were euphoric.”

Reframe Your Job Interview Approach

The emotional stress of a job interview is widely recognized. No matter how much self-confidence you try to project, the reality is that it is an occasion where you have little power and where you are being personally scrutinized and judged. It is awkward, uncomfortable, and anxiety-provoking.

Approach an interview bearing a mental tape that keeps repeating “I have to get this job . . . I have to present myself perfectly . . .” and the stress level rises to the point of immobility. You can’t think clearly or creatively because of the panic gnawing at the back of your brain. You mumble, fall over your words, and forget what you intended to say because your nerves have overwhelmed your carefully prepared presentation.

If at all possible, approach your next interview as just one more opportunity for practice. Try to convince yourself that this is not the job of your dreams but an expenditure of time to allow you to watch yourself to learn for future interviews when you really want to receive an offer.

Look back at your own history and see how often you were offered positions you didn’t really want and, conversely, failed to make the grade for jobs you found exciting and tempting. You may have assumed, as most of us do, that you weren’t quite good enough for a prime job and were simply offered positions that no one else wanted.

Then consider whether the difference might have been how you presented yourself, often most effectively when your internal pressure to perform is less intense.

Receptionist Job Descriptions

Receptionist jobs are frequently advertised as they are commonly sought by companies and firms. The most important part of a receptionist job description is the status of the job - it can be either full time or part time. It is also important to find out the reporting structure, the summary of the position, the accountabilities, preferred knowledge, qualifications and experience and the location of the job.

There are various important requirements that a receptionist job description asks to be fulfilled from those that apply to such jobs. It is important for one applying for a receptionist to be smooth and efficient in running a front desk. The receptionist needs to be able to perform a lot of duties, including keeping an eye on who comes and goes at the same time an eye on the reception area and guest rooms. Receptionists have to ensure that the appointment books are well maintained and coordinated.

However, their most important job is to maintain decorum and a high degree of quality communication between the various parties concerned.

Receptionists are accountable for appointments and scheduling them properly on the days and times specified, as well as reminding people of these appointments. They are required to understand a lot of things about the operations of an office and give information about the same over the phone. They also have to be confident about using computers and software applications that are necessary for their jobs. They also need to be able to make recommendations and handle complaints and requests in a professional and calm manner.

Often the main knowledge or qualifications asked for in receptionist job descriptions are those pertaining to good communication skills, presentablity and language skills with the ability to take up roles and responsibilities on a pro-active basis.

In addition to all of this, the most important quality perhaps, is that they need to be confident with organizational ability and also possess the capacity to multi-task. Often receptionists also have to take up tasks related to selling.

The Best Way To Find Work Is To Stop Looking For A Job!

Question: What is the worst way to find career direction? Answer: The classifieds.

How did you get started in your present career? You probably answered a Help Wanted ad or secured a job by happenstance, then settled for the position you were offered. And even though it wasnt quite what you were hoping for, heyit paid the bills, right?

WRONG, according to one of Americas career development experts, former USA Today columnist and global business consultant-turned-author Dr. Michael Shahnasarian. His book DECISION TIME: A Guide to Career Enhancement argues that settling is the last thing you should do.

Commissioned by the National Career Development Association, the worlds leading organization of professional career consultantsand with a foreword by Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf, U.S. Army (Ret.)this brilliant guide gives readers the insiders secrets to help you identify opportunities and realize career goals.

Work is a major life activity that consumes approximately one-half of our waking hours during our adult years, says Dr. Shahnasarian. Being unfulfilled or less than fully satisfied in your career development is akin to conceding that you dont really want satisfaction in your life.

Based on proven methodology used by career counselors, the book offers a systematic process for career decision-making and planning, taking out the trial-and-error approach that too many people use.

When life is so short, it should be everyones goal to avoid wasting valuable time by going down the wrong avenues, says Dr. Shahnasarian. That means helping people to more clearly focus their objectives and develop reasonable plans for implementing career decisions.

The book is already in its third printing because the first edition was a global best seller. The author has enjoyed worldwide renown, two gubernatorial appointments to provide advice and counsel to state commissions in Florida and numerous honors and awards, and posts on three editorial boards for major industry journals.

Dr. Michael Shahnasarian is one of the nations leading experts on career development. He holds a Ph.D. in counseling psychology from Florida State University and is a nationally certified career counselor and licensed psychologist. Dr. Shahnasarian has served as a consultant to many national and global business organizations including Accenture, Gerdau-AmeriSteel Corporation, Lockheed-Martin, Honeywell and Maritrans. A past president of the National Career Development Association, Dr. Shahnasarian is a popular lecturer, writer and author of six books. He resides with his family in Florida.

How To Enter The World Of Private Investigation

Becoming a private investigator is an option many people have turned to in recent years simply because it provides versatility in their work environment. The choice to become your own boss is by far the biggest attraction however, if this doesn’t appeal to you, then the option of working in a team environment is also there.

The private investigation business is one of the few that can be operated on either a full or part time basis. Once accredited, many P.I.’s will commence either part time, “cutting their teeth” as they learn the business or start with a private investigation firm. Gaining experience in the field is vitally important but at the same time, gathering knowledge about running a business is vital.

Training Requirements

Becoming a private investigator does require some training although academic requirements are not as rigid as most other professions. Completing a course or courses in some form of criminal investigation can only enhance your prospects of landing your initial job. While you want to be seen as having an all round ability in most areas requiring investigative work, completing a course in a specialised field will be to your advantage such as white collar fraud or insurance.

More and more schools and colleges are offering P.I. related courses today given the express rate of growth in the private investigation business. In a lot of cases, people will come from professions such as the police force or military and in general, require little extra training for their new career.

Licensing Requirements

There are some concessions you need to satisfy before issued with a private investigator license. In the USA, most states require state licensing however, there are several that do not. This does not mean however that these states won’t require licenses under their local county or city laws. Check your own state’s licensing information.

Essentially, if you are 18 or over, and don’t have a criminal record you’ll satisfy most licensing requirements.

How Much Can You Earn?

Obviously this depends on your level of experience. As a business owner, your earning capacity is great however, working for a private investigation firm, your earnings can vary from anywhere between $30,000 to $100,000. These figures are only meant to be used as a guide but again, earning capacity depends to a great extent on your level of experience.

Another strong earning factor centers around the class of neighborhood you are working in. Obviously, more affluent areas will give you the capacity to charge higher rates as a business owner but it will also be more competitive. At last count, the average hourly charge in the USA was about $55 an hour but rates heading up to $200 and hour can be charged in some cases.

Starting Out on a Business Career

If you are considering a business career, but have no more detailed an idea of what you want to do, then there is much to consider and countless possibilities. The word “business” covers so many diverse activities; any employment activity in which money transactions take place is almost certainly a business, or relates to a business. Medical transactions, for example, can be business to the supplier even if not to the end user, a doctor; if a private doctor, then it is business to the doctor too. Growing food is a business, transport is a business, most sport is a business, and music is often a business. The list could go on and on. If you look at every man made item within your sight, the chances are it is the product of a business, and financial transactions have taken place along the way. Business is reflected all around you.

However, deciding on what type of business it is that you want to have a career in is only one of the main parts of your decision. Another is, what aspect of that business do you want to specialise in? Do you want to be a finance specialist, or marketing, or computing? Or some other job within a business?

Nowadays, a third major decision can easily come to mind. That is, do you want a home business career or to have a separate workplace? Often related to that decision is whether or not you want to be freelance or self employed, rather than an employee?

In this article we will just offer some headings under which you need to start considering your career. But before you even go that far, it is probably worthwhile considering your career objectives and personal objectives. Also, the better you know and understand your own motivation for wanting a business career, the more likely you are to take the best direction for your future.

Deciding on What Aspect of Business to Specialize in For Your Career

Deciding on what aspects of business you want to specialize in is perhaps the best place to start. Each of the main departments of a business will be considered in more detail in separate articles. It is also important to consider your long term goal. If you want to be a business owner or chief executive, then to be effective you will need to understand all the key aspects of running a business, and how they inter-relate. For now, the broad “departments” you will find across all businesses are:

Finance

A business will have financial transactions, therefore a finance function will be essential simply for financial accounting purposes. However, to be an efficient and forward looking business, timely management information will be important too. Financial staff, if they are good, will need to relate easily to other departments within the business and understand their perspectives too. A spell in finance can be an excellent grounding for business management, whether for your own or someone else’s business.

From my own experience, studying for professional management accountant status in England many years ago was what helped me to understand business much better than I would otherwise have done. With so many examinations to pass to qualify, in diverse subjects such as company and business law, computing, financial and management accounting, marketing and corporate planning, organisation and production, it provided an excellent grounding indeed.

Marketing

Alongside finance, marketing is a part of business that can inspire and produce business leaders, chief executives and successful business owners. Gaining experience in marketing is not only very interesting for those who are creative, it can become a very powerful asset in a business career. If you can get experience and finance, then you are well placed for a successful business career.

Other Business Departments

Other departments of a business to consider are purchasing, human resources (personnel department), and computing. Depending on the type of business, there may also be research, production and other departments.

Deciding on What Type of Business to Specialize in For Your Career

If your ambition is to become a business manager or owner, then the skills you acquire in the key areas of business will be applicable to any type of business. Marketing, finance and computing figure in every modern business. So, to an extent, it does not matter what the type of business is that you start in as a stepping stone to business management.

There are far too many types of business to consider listing here, and what you decide on will depend on what is available at the time, your personality, likes and dislikes, and long term prospects and salary. However, to be successful it is important to enjoy what you are doing, so choosing a type of business that you feel comfortable with is more likely to serve your career prospects well, than a business where you feel totally out of place.

Careers in Songwriting

Songwriting- a musical career! Its a powerful profession that requires creativity, dedication, enthusiasm and a clear understanding of human emotions. Songwriting allows the writer to capture the essence of life in lyrics. Just like life, it generally deals with one situation and emotion.

Skills Required

Some people are born skilled writers and rhythmic words come to them like breathing; however, this might not be the case with others. The skills of songwriting can be discussed, understood and implemented with the help of craftsmanship. Tangible skills are manipulated in order to take the listeners into whatever emotion songwriters want them to feel. Songwriters need to work hard almost all the time to get the proper words and melody. There is a certain kind of mystery to songwriting that gradually unfolds with tremendous satisfaction, after completion of a song.

A song is basically an abstract musical entity that serves as an umbrella to several renditions. Its an extension to ones mind and soul that leads to the fine blend of simplicity in creativity. The sole purpose of writing beautiful songs is to keep them alive forever. A good song conveys human sentiments or narrates a good story in an interesting and involving way.

Songwriting is a lucrative career, full of opportunities and immense job satisfaction. Songwriters develop their own material that includes writing a material, developing the concept, hiring musicians and engineers as well as recording and producing the material. So, they have the final say on the development of their material.

Career Options

Careers in songwriting would include composer, jingle writer- radio and television, lyricist, performing songwriter and song or music producer. Songwriters can work both, as staff and freelance.

COMPOSERS: A composer generally creates instrumental pieces that can stand alone or combined with lyrics. They may also work as film composers that score music to enhance videos or films.

JINGLE WRITER: A jingle writer can be a songwriter, composer or lyricist who specializes in writing music for radio as well as television commercials. They are responsible for portraying their clients product, musically. They must be strong arrangers, able to compose well and skilled in all techniques.

LYRICISTS: Lyricists are the individuals who can express themselves with words and can develop careers writing words to songs. A talented lyricist would only create the words and work as a team with a music composer.

PERFORMING SONGWRITERS: Performing songwriters create and perform their own music. They write both lyrics and music and are the masters as the performer of their material. They may work as a solo as well as leader of a group featuring their material.

MUSIC PRODUCERS: Music producer makes songwriting, does arrangement adjustments and is also in charge of the creative mix. They keep an eye on the overall project marketability.

Songwriting is certainly a fascinating career as it helps the writer grow both personally and professionally. One can reach the zenith of success by creating songs that appear larger than life, yet being relevant to everyone. A good songwriter often succeeds to move listeners by ideas, emotions, and honest situations, and thereby captures hearts and affect peoples life in a meaningful way.
