Body Language and Good Communication Skills

Good communication skills are essential for successful personal and business relationships. Body language is a vital part of non-verbal communication and it plays a major role in the way you are perceived by others. Body language has a huge impact on making a good first impression. It includes tone of voice, gestures, facial expressions and the use of general positive expressions. It involves various body parts such as the face, mouth, chin, lips, eyes, forehead, eyebrows, fingers, hands, shoulders, neck, chest, feet and knees. Body language and good communication skills help to express your thoughts, ideas and approach clearly.

Body language can communicate many things about you such as whether you are aggressive, attentive, bored, closed, deceptive, defensive, dominant, calculating, emotional, welcoming, open, relaxed, romantic and/or submissive.

The use of facial expressions is one of the most important components of body language and good communication skills. Constant eye contact indicates a positive approach towards the communication. Total lack of eye contact indicates negligence and disinterest. Extended eye contact indicates interest in the communication. An averted gaze, scratching the chin or touching the ear is suggestive of disbelief. If a person is not convinced, they will look away for prolonged periods or their attention will wander.

Boredom is communicated by looking straight at the speaker but in a slightly unfocused manner or by tilting the head to one side. Crossing the arms across the chest indicates unconscious barriers between the speaker and listener. Arms left open is a position suggestive of honesty and acceptance of the situation. A person with folded hands is possibly disapproving or angry.

Body language is filled with nuance and subtleties. It is essential to good communication. Good body language skills can be achieved with practice of nonverbal behavior and practicing your own communication style and skills.

By listening well, communicating better, you will be able to market to your next-level.
